~ Stone of the Month ~
Garnet is most typically known for its rich deep red color, can often be mistaken for a ruby or used in lieu of a ruby, but at a fraction of the price.
This beautiful gemstone stone actually comes in a few other colors, green, yellow, orange, brown and blue to name some. Off on a Whim also has yellow hessonite garnets, in our collection.
It’s widely used in jewelry making, a beautiful stone as either an accent to a piece or all on its own. One of the largest suppliers of garnet is Africa, but other countries such as Australia, Russia, Brazil, India and the United States also source the stone. It rates between 6.5-7 on the hardness scale and is often used in industrial cleaning and abrasions.
Garnets were very popular in the late antique Roman world, and were often inlaid into gold jewelry and adornments. They have been mined in India for over 200 years.
